Ray Harryhausen June 20 1920 - May 7 2013
News came thru today that Ray Harryhauen has passed away at the age of 92. Creator of some of the greatest creatures & worlds that ever populated the silver screen, he was (and still is) a very magical part of being a "monster kid" and a horror/fantasy/scifi movie fan. For me some of the more fascinating of his creations were the "real" creatures he brought to life such as the giant squirrel in The 3 Worlds of Gulliver & in 1961's Mysterious Island as the giant crab scuttles around just like a crab should & the huge prehistoric bird (my favorite Harryhausen creature) struts around just like a big 'ol chicken.
Once in 2003 at a Wonderfest Convention where he was a guest one of the activities was a viewing of the original King Kong in a local movie theatre. He sat in the row behind us (at this point who knows how many times he had seen it) and once I stole a quick look back at him and there he was grinning away in rapt attention. He will be VERY VERY missed.
