THE GREAT TEXAS DYNAMITE CHASE( aka Dynamite Women) 1976

Claudia Jennings Movie Night # 5 !

What better way to celebrate the 4th of July then blowing up a bunch of stuff with Claudia !!

"MAKE A DATE TO DETONATE !"

Produced by Roger Corman's New World Pictures (and one of Claudia's more popular pictures) this 1976 action exploitation favorite gained some notoriety in the early 90's as being looked at as a precursor to Ridley Scott's THELMA AND LOUISE. Although its debatable whether Scott had seen or was even aware of it's existence the two movies do share some similar themes primarily in a plot line based upon two strong central female characters who embark on a road trip which turns ugly & violent (however Claudia and her buddy are a more deliberately crime centered duo from the get go - and show bit more scenery then their 90's counterparts). Although lately its been fun to see how people read things such as social comment or gender issues into exploitation movies that for the most part were likely pretty far from the said films creators end purposes, THE GREAT TEXAS DYNAMITE CHASE while at its core being basic 70's drive-in fare does have some interesting stuff lurking in its plot (whether by design or not by writer Mark Rosin & director Michael Pressman) and fits kind of left handed in with the 70's "road" movie genre. Plus anytime you get Claudia Jennings into a pair of daisy dukes worked into your plot that's a good thing.

Claudia stars as Candy Moran who upon escaping from prison (where she handily worked on a road crew doing blasting) and liberating some dynamite robs a local bank by brandishing the said dynamite and subsequently hands the money over to her Pa (who doesn't seem to mind much as far as her method of obtaining it) in order the pay off the mortgage on the family farm. While at the bank she catches the eye of teller Ellie Jo Turner (Jocelyn Jones from Dirty Harry's THE ENFORCER) who had just been fired from her bank position for constantly being late as a result of languishing in bed with her boyfriend(s). Later a hitchhiking Ellie Jo is picked up by Candy and the two women decide to become partners in the dynamite bank robbing way of life. Eventually they hook up with "Slim" (Johnny Crawford from the THE RIFLEMAN) who serves as a love interest for Ellie Jo and poses has a hostage for the gang's escalating robberies.
Like a lot on 70's exploitation movies its a bit of a schizophrenic proposition and much like New Worlds Nurse series of movies, the film starts off with kind of a goofy comedy vibe to it before turning somewhat serious. At  one point it goes into an extended (way too extended...) under cranked sequence in fast motion that has the trio gleefully counting and playing with their stolen loot, while a short while later there's a couple of bloody shotgun killings. The police are shown to be pretty much complete buffons in the early sequences, but the above mentioned shotgun sequence turns film in almost a 180 degree direction and points it toward its somewhat downbeat ending.

The plot channels a bit BONNIE AND CLYDE and BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID with its pair of rebels vs. the establishment plot line, but doesn't lose sight of the main reasons people would be drawn to this - shit blowing up and Claudia in (and out of) her daisy dukes. We don't get a lot of character establishment (but we really don't need it - or want it) and the the plot sticks pretty close to the Roger Corman mantra of boobs and/or action every 15 minutes or so. With all that being said however, the plot does place its two female leads strongly front and center and in control of their chosen way of life. Though it does offer up the requisite nudity & sex with both Candy and Ellie Jo (sometimes even together), they rebuff any man who forces himself upon them and engage in relationships when they want to and on their terms.
Claudia & Jocelyn have a great chemistry together (in some scenes they look almost like sisters) and film does have some quite funny moments in the first half with Claudia dressing up in a prissy hair bun with large glasses to call in a fake bomb threat in order for Jocelyn to stage a robbery while posing as a pushy bank customer. A wonderfully natural & charismatic actress, Claudia's charms are on full display here and its easy to see why see was one of the few true drive-in stars during the 70's. In 1979 she missed out to replace Kate Jackson on CHARLIE'S ANGELS (with the part going to Shelly Hack) and later that same year she would tragically die in head on automobile collision on Topanga Canyon Blvd. after falling asleep at the wheel of her car.
Under its THE GREAT TEXAS DYNAMITE title this is available from Shout Factory on DVD (in one of their typical schizophrenic packages) that includes the tolerable & sorta fun Corman produced TV pilot GEORGIA PEACHES with Tanya Tucker and Terri Nunn, along with the insufferable and utter crap-fest SMOKEY BITES THE DUST - with Claudia at least getting a disc to herself.

Happy Birthday Claudia Jennings !! (Unholy Rollers 1972)

Claudia Jennings Movie Night # 4 ! Roller Derby Queen Claudia Kicks Butt All Over The Place !!

"A Locker Room Look At The Toughest Broads In The World !"

Born on this day in 1949, a very special birthday remembrance for actress & Playboy model (plus Playmate of the Year for 1969 !) Claudia Jennings. With the release this month on DVD of one of her best remembered roles as a ass kickin’ take-no-prisoners roller derby babe in 1972’s Unholy Rollers, this is a good time to take a moment to remember this truly iconic drive-in movie actress (and a much under appreciated actress to boot).

Made to cash in on the publicity that was being generated by Raquel Welch in Kansas City Bomber (which itself was a major studio attempt on the exploitation/drive-in market) this 1972 low budget Roger Corman produced effort from A.I.P. features editing by a young Martin Scorsese and a really driven almost crazy “with a few screws loose” performance from Claudia (her character defiantly has some anger issues lurking around). She literally OWNS this film (she’s in almost every scene) and along with Gator Bait this is the ultimate Claudia Jennings movie viewing experience.

Claudia's got a Joe Cocker Mad Dogs & Englishmen poster decorating her pad !

Karen Walker (Claudia) toils away in a cat food factory and after getting sick & tired of getting pawed by her lecherous boss she quits and tries out for a spot on the local roller derby team the L.A. Avengers whereupon she makes it (and gets pawed by the lecherous team doctor). Once there she begins her gritty climb to the top beating up and/or running over teammates & opponents alike while running afoul of lesbian teammate and the # 1 roller gal Mickey (Betty Ann Rees SUGAR HILL). Resisting the advances of Mickey during a team get together at a bar Karen is held down by her teammates on a pool table and has her clothes ripped off !

Coming to her rescue team captain Nick (Jay Warela) angrily brandishes a pool cue and they skip out of the bar together and begin a rather tempestuous relationship (which seems to consist of riding around on a motorcycle while shooting out neon signs and occasionally getting into brawls with each other). Their first night however Nick takes her to the Avenger’s arena where he shows her some rolling skating moves while Claudia does a striptease while slowly skating around the track (where if not cut short like it is here would surely have been one of the highlights of 70’s drive-in cinema).

Now as being goaded on by team owner Mr. Stern (Luis Quinn SUPERCHICK) Karen sets her sights on Mickey and the # 1 position all the while going into full psycho primadona mode - “That girl knows showmanship!!” Along the way she visits her trailer park mother played by Jerry Lewis regular Kathleen Freeman, gets a tattoo of the team logo on her forearm (which she raises in triumph to get the crowds pumped up), blasts around town in her tricked out muscle car that has a large silver horse glued on the hood and after making the big time buys some of the most hideously ugly 70's furniture you've ever seen.
Director Vernon Zimmerman keeps the plot moving along at a fast forward pace and the rapid firing editing of Scorsese really gives the races a frantic swirling feeling. As if all this weren't enough you got the cute as heck Candice Roman (THE BIG BIRD CAGE) as Karen's charmingly scatter-brained stripper roommate Donna, Alan Vint (MACON COUNTY LINE) as Donna's not to bright car thief boyfriend Greg and Roberta Collins (CAGED HEAT) as team rival Jennifer.

Claudia (as does most of the cast) does all of her own aggressive roller skating including taking falls and ramming other skaters (and she looks to be having a wonderful time doing it). At first glance with her high forehead and lanky build most people today would probably never consider her a classic beauty (one can't even imagine her in today's photoshop & silicone Playboy), but when looking at her pictures in Playboy and her early film roles there's a very wonderful natural sweetness & beauty about her. One can really see why she was one of the most popular Playmates during the 70's. Down the road in her life she would sadly battle some personal demons and have problems on movie shoots (labeling her "difficult to work with"). Tragically on Oct. 3 1979 she was killed in an automobile accident.
After years of being unavailable Unholy Rollers was recently released by Shout Factory in one of their 4 movie packs (which can be kinda hit or miss). It would be nice to report for Claudia's birthday that this was a definitive release but it does have some issues. Although early internet reviews claimed it being full frame IT IS anamorphic widescreen, but most likely because of compression issues doesn't have as nice contrast & colors as the transfer that ran awhile back on the MGM HD channel. Plus all the Chuck Berry songs (sung by a cover band in the movie) have been removed because of music rights issues (they were intact on the broadcast version however) and replaced by generic instrumentals. Not a perfect release, but its all we got for now and anytime we get some Claudia Jennings on DVD that's a good thing.
Here is an excellent article on her that is well worth reading.

Hicksploitation Movie Night # 6 - 'Gator Bait 1974

(or Claudia Jennings Movie Night # 3 !)

"Swamp Behind....Hell Ahead"

By 1974 Claudia Jennings was really getting her exploitation movie career cranked up. This was one of four movies she appeared in that year (along with two T.V. roles on Barnaby Jones & The F.B.I.) and in 1973 was even on the Brady Bunch.  'Gator Bait is probably her best known role (although I prefer Unholy Rollers) and was directed/produced by the husband and wife team of Beverly & Ferd Sebastian. Plus Ferd (yes Ferd) handled the cinematography and various other Sebastian's show up in the credits - both behind and in front of the camera.

Claudia plays Desiree Thibodeau a poacher who lives the back woods swamp country with her brother & sister and makes a living poaching alligators. One day while tooling around in her boat Desiree (she's even got her own theme song that's played over the credits) is pursued by dimwit Deputy "Billy Bob" and Ben Bracken his equally slow witted friend,- who in their words "want to get 'em some of that cajun swamp rat". She outwits them by throwing a bunch of snakes in their boat and Billy Bob accidentally shoots Ben whereupon he runs back to his sheriff daddy and tell him Desiree was the culprit. Now faced with the prospect of venturing into the swamp and hunting her down the sheriff stops by Ben's farm, where his insane and highly inbred family hangs out. He arrives just in time to catch one of the brothers attempting to rape the sister, which forces the dad to break them up with a bullwhip (which seems to be his usual instrument of discipline). Dad doesn't seem as worried about the incestal sex thing as he does that she's just going to  "squeeze out another dimwit"

Billy Bob & his dad the sheriff, along with the Brackens - father T.J. and his remaining sons Leroy & Pete head off into the swamp to hunt "that cooter down !" Leroy has some past history with Desiree as he attempted to rape her at one point and got castrated by her as a result (In fact as it turns out almost everybody here has some past history with Desiree - mostly involving her late mother & father). The gang soon tracks down Desiree's shack, and as she's out poaching her brother and sister are all alone. In one of the more squirm inducing scenes in the movie, the sister ends up getting killed in a moment that will make even the most jaded drive-in fan jump a little.

Now going all Rambo on her pursuers Desiree begins destroying their boats and picking them off one by one as they begin to turn on themselves. Unlike most movies of this ilk, these is no humor here. This is a very grimey & twisted story with Desiree's family unit shown as loving & carry, while everyone else here is a basically a nasty dirt bag. Claudia doesn't really get to do a whole lot (she has about eight lines of dialogue), but has a terrific screen presence here as she whips around in her boat, lurks ominously in the underbrush with her wild mane of red hair and blasts away with her shotgun (she even throws live snakes around !). Plus she wears about the shortest pair of daisy dukes you've ever seen and spends most of the movie precariously falling out of her skimpy tops.
Ferd's cinematography is really above average for a low budget movie and really captures the feel of a humid/stinky/fetid swamp, plus the boat chases are well shot & edited, even if they go on a bit too long - but heck, thats what we came for (that and Claudia). Except for a short scene in town and another at the Bracken's house, the entire movie takes place in the swamp (this most have the shoot from hell for the cast).  An almost perfect example of a low budget 70's drive-in movie and its got Claudia Jennings in her ass bearing daisy dukes.
