Happy Birthday Sterling Hayden

A big Happy Birthday remembrance for film noir icon and real life mariner Sterling Hayden seen here as Lt. Sims in 1954's Crime Wave directed by the great Andre De Toth.  He was born in 1916 and left us on May 23 1986. In his last role he played a great John Brown in the TV mini series The Blue and The Grey from 1986 and was Steven Spielberg first choice for the role of Quint in 1975's Jaws. He is very missed.

This Aug. Criterion is putting out Stanley Kubrick’s  classic 1956 heist film The Killing. With a cast that includes Sterling Hayden, Coleen Gray, Timothy Carey, Elisha Cook Jr., Marie Windsor, Ted de Corsia, Vince Edwards and Jay C. Flippen (whew...) - you can't go wrong. One of the greatest film noirs ever made. Worth it alone for Timothy Carey.

Crime Wave

Part of Warner's Film Noir Vol. 4 collection, Andre DeToth's Crime Wave is an almost perfect example of a nice tight little crime film. Starring the great Sterling Hayden and a wonderful cast of character actors including Charles Buchinsky (Bronson), Ted De Corsia, Dub Taylor and of course Timothy Carey. In the words of  Lt. Sims (Hayden) - "What do you want, Christmas everyday ....?".

Paired on a DVD with the whacked out and totally demented Decoy starring Jean Gillie, who plays the ultimate evil female noir lead.
